Diagnose one or more mental health conditions (or affirm that no diagnosis exists).

Determine if another, specialized type of assessment is warranted.

Offer treatment considerations, recommendations, and resources.

Identify one’s behavioral, emotional, cognitive, interpersonal, and occupational assets and areas that are in need of development.

Psychological Autopsy

What is a psychological autopsy?

-Josephine Hart

Similar to a medical autopsy conducted to establish a cause of death, a psychological autopsy examines the various factors that contributed to a person’s death by suicide. Identifying these factors can accomplish several goals, including improving suicide prevention and intervention efforts.

who might request a PSYCHOLOGICAL AUTOPSY?

These are often conducted in correctional facilities, but they can be conducted in a variety of other settings and situations (e.g., military settings, treatment facilities, as part of a civil or criminal investigation). So anyone who is tasked with clarifying the why and how of a suicide can request a psychological autopsy.
